There’s something inherently special about a summer gathering. Maybe it’s the golden evening light or the scent of citrus and herbs drifting from the kitchen. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party, brunch on the patio, or having friends over for drinks & tapas, your table is a perfect opportunity to set the tone. At Smith Interior Design, we believe hosting doesn’t have to be fussy. In fact, we love a laid-back table that still feels thoughtful, layered, and beautiful. Here’s how to set a summer table the designer way—effortlessly elevated and totally welcoming.
1. Choose a Mood or Palette
Before anything hits the table, choose your visual direction. What story do you want to tell? Here are some favorite summer table themes:
Coastal Calm: soft blues, whites, sandy tones, and natural linen
Fresh Citrus: pops of yellow, green, and orange with woven textures
Modern Garden: green glassware, wild florals, wood tones, and black accents
Use your color palette to guide your choices in dishes, linens, flowers, and accessories.

2. Layer with Purpose
A well-designed table feels collected, not cluttered. Think in layers:
Foundation: tablecloth, runner, or placemats (use texture or pattern here)
Plates: chargers or dinner plates first, then salad or appetizer plates
Flatware: arranged in the order of use, or get creative for a relaxed look
Napkins: folded or knotted at each place setting—bonus points for napkin rings or greenery
Pro Tip: Keep centerpieces low so guests can easily chat across the table.

3. Create a Centerpiece That’s Effortless (and Seasonal)
There’s no need to go over-the-top. Let summer do the work for you! Some of our favorite centerpiece ideas:
A row of small bud vases with wildflowers or greenery
A wooden tray holding candles, fruit, or succulents
A potted herb garden down the middle—bonus: guests can use them while they eat!
A bowl of citrus on a rattan charger with scattered blooms
And yes—unscented candles are still a must, especially if you’re dining outdoors.

4. Mix High and Low
Don’t be afraid to combine your everyday pieces with special touches. A summer table doesn’t need to match—it needs to feel inviting. Try:
Pairing vintage glasses with simple white plates
Layering woven chargers with basic dishware
Using linen napkins with casual mason jars or enamelware
Combining ceramic and wood serving pieces for a relaxed, organic mix
The blend is what makes it interesting.

5. Make It Personal
The finishing touch? Add something unexpected that makes your guests feel seen. Try:
Handwritten place cards (simple craft paper works!)
Mini menus or a card with the evening’s cocktail
A small favor like a sprig of rosemary, local honey, or a citrus slice tied in cheesecloth
A short welcome toast to set the tone
Thoughtful doesn’t mean time-consuming—it just means memorable.

Whether you’re gathering around a formal dining table or a weathered picnic bench, what matters most is the experience. With a little styling and a lot of heart, your summer table can become the setting for meaningful connection, laughter, and stories your guests will carry with them. You set the table. Summer will bring the magic.
