Open Concept Isn’t Dead… But It's Changing

Open concept is evolving, and the way we define “open” is shifting with it. For years, open concept was the gold standard. Wide open spaces, everything visible, everything connected. And while that’s not going away, people are starting to realize something important: Complete openness isn’t always practical. Noise travels. Visual clutter builds. And sometimes, you just want a little separation. Thus, for our 4th Styled for Real Life blog post, we are looking critically at open concept living spaces.

What we’re seeing now is a shift toward “defined openness.” Spaces still feel connected, but they have subtle structure:
Ceiling details that define areas
Furniture layouts that create natural boundaries
Partial walls, glass partitions, or built-ins
Changes in materials or textures to signal transitions
Designer Myth: “Open concept means no walls at all.”
True openness is not about removing everything. It’s about creating flow while still giving each space a sense of purpose. If you’re rethinking your layout or planning a future project, finding the right balance between openness and structure can completely transform how your home feels. We’d love to help you explore what that could look like.
