How to Freshen Up Your Kitchen

The kitchen is where summer really happens. It’s the backdrop to lemonade poured after a pool day, early morning coffee with the windows open, or evenings spent cooking with the people you love. And while it may not be time for a full remodel, there are plenty of ways to give your kitchen a summer refresh using simple, intentional design updates. Here’s how to breathe new life into your kitchen—without gutting it.

1. Start with the Counters: Clear, Then Curate

We often forget how many items are living on our countertops—and how quickly they can make a space feel cluttered and chaotic.

Design Tip: Remove everything, then slowly bring items back that are either beautiful or useful (preferably both!)

Curate the essentials:

  • A cutting board with character (leaned or layered)

  • A stylish ceramic crock for utensils

  • A bowl of fresh citrus or seasonal fruit

  • A pretty olive oil bottle on a tray

This is what we call functional styling—practical pieces arranged with visual intention.

2. Upgrade Your Textiles

Swapping out textiles is one of the fastest ways to shift a room’s mood.

For summer, think:

  • Lightweight linen or cotton tea towels

  • A woven runner near the sink or stove

  • Fresh potholders or oven mitts in seasonal tones

  • Even a small curtain change if you have a kitchen window

Choose soft, relaxed patterns—think stripes, washed neutrals, or sun-faded hues.

3. Bring in Natural Elements

Summer is all about bringing the outdoors in. Add one or more of the following:

  • A planter of fresh herbs on the sill

  • A vase with clipped branches or greenery

  • A rustic wooden bowl or woven basket for produce

  • Rattan or seagrass trays for corralling countertop items

Natural textures add warmth and a sense of ease to the heart of your home.

4. Swap the Hardware or Light Fixtures

If you're feeling ready for a bit more of a transformation, replacing hardware is one of the highest-impact changes you can make without a full renovation. Consider:

  • Brushed brass for warmth

  • Matte black for contrast

  • Soft pewter or nickel for timeless appeal

A new pendant light or wall sconce can also reframe the entire atmosphere of your kitchen. Choose a fixture that complements your cabinetry and adds some summer charm.

5. Style Open Shelves with Intention

If you have open shelves or glass-front cabinets, this is your styling playground. Edit and rotate:

  • Replace dark or heavy dishware with white ceramics or glass

  • Stack summer cookbooks or display a favorite dish

  • Use art or framed recipe cards as shelf-backdrops

  • Tuck in a small plant for freshness

Keep it airy, light, and minimal—nothing should feel overcrowded. Your kitchen doesn’t have to be brand new to feel brand new. With a few thoughtful changes, you can create a space that reflects the brightness and ease of the season. A little freshness goes a long way—especially in the room that feeds, welcomes, and hosts every day of the summer.
