Coastal Design Without the Cliché

Coastal design is a favorite—especially here in Florida, where sun, sand, and sea are never far away. But creating a beach-inspired space doesn’t mean plastering every wall with anchors or filling every bowl with shells. In fact, the most elegant coastal homes whisper “seaside,” rather than shout it. We love coastal done rightnatural, timeless, and elevated. If you want your home to feel like a relaxed, sophisticated retreat, here’s how to capture that breezy coastal look… without the clichés!

1. Use a Coastal Color Story (But Keep It Soft)

The foundation of great coastal design is the palette. Think soft, desaturated hues inspired by nature:

  • Sea glass greens

  • Warm sandy neutrals

  • Sky blues and misty grays

  • Crisp white with a weathered finish

Avoid stark contrast. Let colors flow from one room to the next for a sense of calm and cohesion.

2. Prioritize Natural Textures

Texture brings warmth and depth to a coastal space—especially when you layer them.

Incorporate materials like:

  • Rattan, cane, or seagrass (chairs, light fixtures, side tables)

  • Linen or cotton slipcovers

  • Raw or whitewashed wood finishes

  • Woven baskets for storage and styling

A single textured element can make even a minimalist room feel grounded and organic.

3. Choose Art That’s Coastal in Mood, Not Motif

Skip the literal depictions (no painted beach signs needed!). Instead, choose art that evokes the feeling of the coast. Consider:

  • Abstract watercolors in soft blue tones

  • A large landscape of dunes or open sea

  • Textural pieces like framed linen, driftwood sculptures, or plaster reliefs

  • Local photography with coastal views or wildlife

Art should add to the serenity, not feel like a souvenir.

4. Bring the Outdoors In

Natural light and connection to the outdoors are key elements of relaxed coastal living. Design Tips:

  • Keep window treatments minimal—try sheer linen panels or woven shades

  • Use mirrors to reflect light and views

  • Incorporate greenery (olive trees, palms, or eucalyptus) to echo the outdoors

Bonus: Open up your furniture layout to emphasize flow and airiness—think breezy walkways and uncluttered corners.

5. Add Just One (or Two) Coastal Touches

Yes, you can use a shell or a piece of coral—just don’t overdo it. The key to tasteful coastal design is restraint. Try one or two of these subtle hints that add personality without overwhelming the space:

  • A large clam shell as a centerpiece or catch-all

  • A piece of driftwood on a shelf or mantel

  • A nautical stripe pillow in soft blue and ivory

  • A vintage bottle or piece of sea glass in a vignette

Coastal design is about more than location—it’s about feeling. A home that’s calm, comfortable, and connected to nature will always feel timeless. When done well, the coastal look doesn’t feel themed—it feels like a breath of fresh air!
